Biomimicry: an optimisation catalyst for transport and logistics Logistics & transport are key for a large part of our economies and industries. It is a strategic area which represents €43 billion of France's GDP . The challenge of transformation and optimization is significant: the sector represents 31% of GHG emissions on a global scale. DIAGNOSTIC In our modern economies, transport and logistics are omnipresent. And this on several scales and through several vectors: maritime, fluvial, road, air or rail transport, storage and warehousing, hub-and-spoke, digitisation, etc. Given the substantial volume of goods exchanged (368.5 billion tonne-kilometres of goods transited by road in France in 2018), the slightest optimisation can have significant economic and environmental effects. The major optimisation challenges for the sector fall into 3 categories: Better matching stocks to production; Optimise goods routes and flow, as well as the technologies used; Optimise space & storage. In addition, there are two socio-environmental objectives which are gaining importance : on one hand automation and robotisation to cut costs and reduce drudgery, and on the other reduction of the often criticised ecological footprint. How can the transport and logistics sector integrate technical optimisation and sustainability in the pursuit of its development? Biomimicry, transport and logistics: A pioneer in the field, Bioxegy explains how biomimicry is a technological response of choice for imagining the future of goods flows and networks. Flow management and optimisation, resilient and adaptive networks, distributed intelligence, data detection and interpretation, conditionning, packaging, robotics and industry 4.0: there is no shortage of areas of bio-inspired innovation in transport and logistics. What insights can biomimicry provide into technilogical development? Every day, nature ensures the mobility of billions of species, in constrained environments. To ensure the complex orchestration of ecosystems, living organisms must also guarantee extreme optimisated management of resources and information. An expert at managing production and optimising inventory, often far-sighted, but also a just-in-time specialist, nature has developped unstoppable and sophisticated logistical mechanisms. Biologists from all fields are highlighting the ability of living beings to minimise empty spaces, take the most optimal routes, perfect storage systems, organise space and save energy...

Biomimicry, detection and information processing: shaping the intelligent systems of the future. Across industries, especially in mobility, the trend is toward empowerment and connectivity. Infrastructure, furniture, equipment, household appliances, vehicles, planes, drones, trains or metros: systems must be ever more intelligent, connected, responsive and reliable. Depending on the industry and the context considered, they must be able to detect and interpret an environment, understand or anticipate an ongoing phenomenon or measure physical data with precision, including in the event of partial failure. Manufacturers, whoever they may be, are therefore developping all kinds of sensors, particularly optical or reflective. And for the information collected to have value, it must obviously be processed and induced an adequate and rapid response from the system and its calculation units, particularly for embedded systems in the mobility sector. Signal processing methods, the algorithms that govern them, memory management and calculation speed are quickly becoming technological issues. These systems and intelligences will also be the subject of intense competition. How can we increase the multisensorality and reliability of systems and develop new types of sensors? How to improve detection skills? How to develop fast and simple artificial intelligence? Information management was not invented by man. Nature is much more experienced and can offer many particularly interesting lessons. Nature orchestrates complex ecosystems. To interact, species must understand the environment around them and therefore analyse the information they perceive. Hearing, sight, touch, sensitivity to magnetic fields, chemoreceptors: the intelligence of perception methods is almost infinite. Processing complex signals, correlating them and making appropriate decisions is the most common activity in all living species. Each individual has a nervous system and a brain that allows them to respond to complex, sometimes unprecedented, situations to ensure their daily survival. The processing of information is not an animal monopoly, since it is also carried out in the plant world. Natural treatment principles and systems are highly effective, regardless of the neuronal capacities of the species studied. They are both simple and sophisticated, extremely efficient and fundamentally sober in their design and consumption. A specialist in the field, Bioxegy explains to you why and how biomimicry is a source of solutions and new approaches for designing the detection and information processing systems of the future. Here we provide you with a selection of particularly evocative examples. The human vision: optimising the reaction speed of autonomous embedded systems. Traditional methods of processing information involve analysing the perceived image, pixel by pixel. Their reactivity remains relative. These techniques can be replaced by an approach inspired by the human “retina-cortex” binary. It invites us to no longer study the entirety of each image but to record modifications of certain global characteristics such as hue, speed or direction. This type of processing makes it possible to quickly eliminate irrelevant elements such as buildings or trees on the side of the road or an object moving away from the vehicle. Inspired by human vision , the French company Prophesee has designed vision systems offering machines with reactivity that is close to ours. This technology is based on the observation of events rather than images. More energy efficient and multifunctional, this bio-inspired system finds applications in many sectors : from automobiles to health, including robotics and industrial assembly. Prophesee has a string of international awards: the company was nominated for the Silicon 60 Class of the American magazine EE Times for the third consecutive year in 2019 as well as winning the Top Innovation 2019 prize from inVISION magazine. Crédits images : © Prophesee Dragonflies: optimise anticipation of trajectories and detection of obstacles. In the field of mobility, autonomous vehicles, trains, or drones must be able to understand their environment. To do this, algorithms must be able to analyse the reality of a given situation. Intelligent, they must be able to anticipate the trajectories of other objects. In the case of land mobility: other cars, pedestrians, cyclists for example. Even if it is a faculty mastered by human beings, we are far from being the most gifted in this area. Many insects are much more reactive and clever than we are. They could inspire new methods of developping algorithms. The dragonfly is a formidable predator: its success rate is estimated at 95% (compared to 50% for the white shark). It has 360° vision and an exceptional reaction time of 30 milliseconds. It is especially impressive with its ability to follow its prey, notably flies, midges and mosquitoes, and to anticipate their trajectories to better catch them in mid-flight. This biological model of the dragonfly turns out to be less complex to study than that of humans and the still unknown mechanisms of their brain. Researchers from the universities of Lund in Sweden and Adelaide in Australia therefore looked at the insect to understand its ability to detect movements and anticipate trajectories in order to replicate it within artificial neural networks. They designed an autonomous robot to test their innovation which would optimise the analysis of the trajectories of objects tracked in the vehicle environment. This technology will open the way to a better reaction to incidents and risky situations and the possibility of creating better maneuvers to avoid obstacles or other vehicles. Crédits images : © University of Adelaide Locust swarms: an unrivaled anti-collision system. When it comes to computers and on-board systems, the question of overload often arises. How to prioritise information in a dense data flow? This is particularly the case in the field of mobility, for which it is important to develop rapid analysis systems capable of detecting collisions. The prioritisation of perceived information is a specialty of nature, which must solicit the nervous systems of animals as little as possible to guarantee low energy consumption. Here too, biomimicry can provide intelligent answers! Let's look at the locust: this insect has the particularity of being able to move in swarms. Some clouds of locusts even reach more than 40 million individuals per km²! Despite this incredible density, the risk of collision between individuals is extremely low. It is clear that the locust's ability to avoid its congeners is extremely perfected and very rationaliqed, as the insect must react quickly by means of a nervous system that is infinitely simple compared to the human brain. How do they avoid the collisions? The locust has a giant neuron inside its brain, responsible for controlling the insect. The visual stimuli perceived by the locust generate electrical potentials travelling along the optic nerve to the giant neuron. This acts as a filter: for the vision of a locust, objects or congeners flying on a collision course generate a greater electrical potential than congeners flying in parallel. These strong signals inducing higher voltage manage to pass through the giant neuron to reach the brain. Other signals are filtered and neglected. Thus, the locust is only concerned with a small number of elements and obstacles. The others are ignored automatically. By studying the functioning of this neuron, researchers at the University of Lincoln have developped a fast and economical sensor for autonomous vehicles. Particularly useful research for developping algorithms capable of acting in traffic-laden environments or quite simply for de-saturating embedded system computers. The elephant fish (Gnathonemus petersii) is a nocturnal fish found in African rivers. It evolves in particularly murky environments, turbulent and dark waters. Despite everything, it is quite capable of spotting its prey and its peers. Its detection method is based on an electric field that it produces by muscular contraction. It then perceives the slightest variation in this electric field thanks to its electro-receptors to locate its prey or its peers. Inspired by this electrical sense, the French company Elwave was able to develop a set of sensors allowing the detection and electromagnetic characterisation in real time of all types of objects at 360°. Already used to guide underwater robots or detect buried objects, this technology can considerably reduce the risk of blind spots and poor visibility for a vehicle in circulation. Crédits images : © Elwave The nictitating membranes of camelids: ensuring the cleaning of sensors There is little point in developping high-performance and sophisticated sensors if they become clogged and blind in poor weather conditions. Here is an example that Bioxegy worked on, in the automotive sector. Current cleaning systems, which are nozzles similar to windshield nozzles, often require a lot of water and require very regular maintenance, which is impossible to carry out over long journeys. Consumption has even been estimated at 100 L/h in snowy weather! Faced with this problem with one of its clients, Bioxegy turned to camelids, camels and dromedaries. These desert mammals must confront the aridity of their environment and face particularly intense sandstorms. They still manage to clean their eyes of impurities and grains of sand. They owe this very particular ability to their nictitating membranes, transparent third eyelids which ensure the protection of the eyeball as well as its cleaning. This "biological system" is particularly effective because it minimises the use of the tear glands which lubricate the cleaning action. Inspired by this principle, Bioxegy's teams were able to imagine a mechatronic cleaning device for the optical sensors of autonomous vehicles, saving water and energy! Discover the whole project Crédits images : © Bioxegy Desert ants: orient themselves in space using only light rays Can we consider that a vehicle or train whose orientation relies exclusively on a battery of satellites as truly autonomous? This is the question that arises for autonomous vehicles whose guidance is done by GPS. Indeed, this system presents certain limitations, apart from the quantity of infrastructure necessary for its operation, such as its resolution varying from 5 to 15 meters or its sensitivity to storms or fog. The democratisation of autonomous means of transport, particularly in certain regions of the world, could quickly mean that a particular vehicle must find its way by itself without using GPS. But, what if the answer came from ants? Desert ants (Cataglyphis) have an exceptional ability to position themselves in space. They are able to find their way without resorting to phenomena, these chemical receptors normally used by other species of ants. Their positionning technique is based on a triple strategy: they study the polarisation of sunlight, measure the distance by optical flow and count their steps. Researchers from the National Center of Scientific Research and the University of Aix-Marseille , at the Institute of Movement Sciences - Étienne Jules Mayer (ISM) have designed the Antbot robot, directly inspired by these desert ants. Antbot replicates the navigation stratagem of ants and is able to return to its starting point after a random exploration of 14 meters within one centimeter. Note here that this technology requires very low computing capacity, therefore considerable savings in equipment, weight and energy. This technique could inspire other navigation technologies in many areas, notably mobility, and lead to simple and efficient equipment. Bioxegy then finely formulates a biomimetic pre-concept which will be developed in Phase 2. Common types of results The results at the end of Phase 1 can take different forms depending on the type of subjects covered and the needs of our partner: from a simple technical note supported by the latest work of scientific experts to pre-dimensioning validated by finite elements or CFD simulations. Pre Biomimetic Study Advanced Biomimetic Design Study Proof-of-Concept (POC), Experimental Project Proof-of-Concept (POC), Experimental Project PHASE 2 : Advanced Biomimetic Design Study Objective - TRL 3 - 4 Most often following a Phase 1, Phase 2 consists of continuing the development of an biomimetic technology that has been identified and considered promising. The objective of Phase 2 is to demonstrate and precisely characterise the performance of a biomimetic concept in the specific industrial case submitted by our partner. Unfolding - 4 - 12 mois The progress of Phase 2 depends on the type of expected results and the collaboration method collaboration with our partner. In particular, we have the expertise to be autonomous in modeling and simulation work, with workshops and steering committees organized as necessary. In the case of experimental studies, we can work directly with the laboratories and technicians of our partners, or in contact with third-party academic partners depending on the needs of the project. Common types of results Depending on the level of maturity at the start of the project and the type of technology considered, advanced design can take many different forms: analytical modeling, numerical simulations, algorithm development, chemical formulations, first prototypes, implementation of an experience plan, partner benchmark, etc. Pre Biomimetic Study Advanced Biomimetic Design Study Proof-of-Concept (POC), Experimental Project Proof-of-Concept (POC), Experimental Project PHASE 3 : Proof-of-Concept (POC), Projet Expérimental Objective - TRL 5 - 6 Phase 3 can follow various objectives depending on the projects, partners or industrial context. Usually it will consist of carrying out a proof of concept (POC) which are the first industrial demonstrators of a successful biomimetic concept. Unfolding - 3 - 18 mois The progress of a Phase 3 is extremely project-dependent and must be defined on a case-by-case basis with our partner. Bioxegy thus ensures the handover of the R&D work carried out and supports the industrialisation of the biomimetic concept. Pre Biomimetic Study Advanced Biomimetic Design St udy Proof-of-Concept (POC), Experimental Project Proof-of-Concept (POC), Experimental Project PHASE 4: Design Iteration and Industrialisation Phase 4 is considered on a case-by-case basis in order to support the scaling-up and industrialisation of technologies developed in previous Phases. • Biomimicry: explore a whole new universe of innovation through the living

Biomimicry uses the ingenuity of the living world to inspire the technologies and services of the future. Bioxegy is France's pioneering biomimicry agency. Dare to innovate in bio-inspired R&D! Analysis of the sector’s innovation potential Explore a whole new universe of innovation through the living. Bioxegy Biomimétisme The rise of innovation through biomimicry: the Da Vinci Index Biomimicry continues to attract curiosity in the world of innovation , whether it is researchers, R&D engineers or even CSR departments,… The Da Vinci Index , is an indicator developed by the Fermanian Business & Economic Institute in the United States, it quantifies innovation through biomimicry in the world, taking into account the number of scientific publications, patents and the amount of research funding in the field. The figures speak for themselves: between 2000 and 2019, the number of publications increased 10-fold globally (and 100-fold in China!), while the number of patents grew by +740% over the same period. + Evolution of the amount of biomimetic research papers from 1995 à 2018 Indian Institut of Technology Report Building on its success, biomimicry now expresses its potential beyond the boundaries of the academic sphere. Indeed, it has been developing little by little since the 2010s, with renewed interest in 2020, in the R&D departments of many manufacturers - ranging from start-ups to multinationals , passing through the tissues of SMEs and ETIs . Moreover, in collaboration with the R&D departments of large industrial groups, Bioxegy imagines, designs and develops cutting-edge bio-inspired technologies, adapted to the different technical challenges they encounter. Discover the benefits of biomimicry in these different sectors of activity below : Industrial sectors The benefits of innovations through biomimicry for the environment To answer to the constraints to which it is subject, the living must optimise its processes, mechanisms and structures. Over the course of evolution, the most efficient systems given the constraints of their environment have thrived and survived, leaving us with an inexhaustible source of inspiration and able to respond to most industrial issues encountered. There are many key elements in the success and potential of biomimicry for innovation. In essence, living organisms tend to optimise all factors (weight-resistance ratio, energy cost, thermal regulation, multifunctionality, etc.) while the industry aims to maximise one or more defined parameters (rarity of a material, possibility of machining, etc.) to the detriment of others. We see, for example, that living things produce many different materials from very few chemical elements (CHNOPS: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur) assembled into complex structures while industrially, we find many simple structures but with many different chemical elements (the entire periodic table, including current issues with the use of rare earths). In this context, 3D printing has greatly contributed to the development of biomimicry by making it possible to intelligently develop structures inspired by life, that are more complex and material-saving. In short, the solutions developed by living organisms very frequently combine high performance, low production cost and multifunctionality. Drawing on the wisdom and intelligence of living know-how and thus reconciling technological progress and sustainability, this is our vision at Bioxegy. Biomimicry 3.8 was able to identify and transpose the major principles of life (these global strategic models found in the species that survive and thrive on Earth) into the principles of biomimicry. This outlines basic rules linked to biomimetic design and which allow biomimicry to be part of the principles of sustainable development established by the UN . Biomimicry's principles by Biomimicry 3.8 According to a report from BIS Institute on biomimicry in 2018, in the United States, biomimicry would save a value of 50 billion dollars in terms of conserved resources and CO2 not emitted by 2025. In 2030, this could represent 500 billion dollars globally. Innovation through biomimicry is already showing interesting results, in particular thanks to technologies making it possible to reduce the environmental impact or even to capture carbon, such as biomineralisation . It is precisely this mission that the European program CSTO2NE, which Bioxegy is apart of, leads to: a real interdisciplinary scientific collaboration project with the aim of identifying innovative and sustainable carbon absorption solutions, in particular through the formation of stable and resistant materials with important added value for the industry. Biomimicry's innovation potential and its growth As we have seen, biomimicry is a promising R&D and innovation method whose relevance to environmental issues and sustainable development is only reinforced. And it doesn’t stop there! Indeed, biomimicry is seen as a real lever for economic development in the coming years. By 2030, biomimicry could represent nearly 425 billion dollars per year of America's GDP (or 1.8%) and 2 million jobs in the United States. The predicted impact of bio-inspired innovation on employment in 2030 in the United States In South Korea, according to the Journal of Ecological Economics , the local development of bio-inspired technologies will represent nearly 62 billion dollars and 650,000 new jobs by 2035, and almost 382 billion in 2050 (i.e. 18% of its GDP). A national policy, launched in 2019, encourages the R&D development of bio-inspired technologies and the training of tomorrow's biomimetic engineers . The relevance of biomimicry and its potential growth is perceived by a growing number of countries, in particular by China whose government recently deployed substantial financial aid to support bio-inspired projects in the fields of design and architecture. China's growth in biomimicry is therefore 10 times faster than average ! At the global level, the report of BIS Institute predicts that biomimicry could constitute trilllions of dollars of GDP , so more than half of the global automotive sector. Confined to the development of strategies of highly industrialised countries, this potential for innovation could also be fully realised in developing countries where biomimicry today is still insufficiently considered and studied at its true value. Many countries in Latin America, Central Africa and South-East Asia, representing a large part of the world's biodiversity, have not yet fully exploited the potential of biomimicry, whose long-term economic and environmental benefits are estimated by the Journal of Ecological Economics . Biomimicry: a vector of the 6th wave of innovation After the digital revolution of the last 30 years, many researchers see biomimicry as a vector of the new technological and industrial revolution, it was also identified as one of the 8 vectors of the emergence of the sixth wave of innovation. In France, the CNRS (National Scientific Research Center) also mentionned biomimicry in its strategic priority areas in 2020. Indeed, biomimicry is a promising field, given the number of disciplines involved and the diversity of subjects. Its heterogeneous nature also induces a plurality of solutions possible and conceivable, and just as many implementation methods. Its ability to respond intelligently to a very wide variety of technical issues therefore makes it a perfect candidate to support a world in the midst of change and whose constraints are increasing drastically from year to year. Biomimicry's innovative potential supports the development of Bioxegy For 5 years, our company has been growing and developing. Indeed, from year to year our total revenue doubles while our confidence is affirmed with large industrial groups from around twenty sectors, implementing to date nearly 80 ambitious R&D projects. Our success is due to the development of unique expertise and methodologies in Europe as well as our motivation , thoroughness and the diverse profiles on our team which has increased tenfold since its beginnings. We discern relevant biological mechanisms capable of responding to the major industrial issues encountered by our partners, then transpose these principles to develop new biomimetic concepts whose maturity we are gradually increasing. The progressive feeding of our database , collecting to date nearly 1500 bio-inspired technologies , allows us to enrich our knowledge and become more efficient as our projects progress. Our modus operandi at Bioxegy 01 02 Submission of the industrial challenge(s) Our partner submits to us one or several industrial challenges, in the form of a specific problem (pain point), an incremental innovation need or a more prospective and broad issue.

Biomimicry & aerodynamics: A commonplace The challenge is the same in many industries, particularly in aeronautics or in the automotive industries: the future of these sectors depend largely on their ability to reduce the environmental impact of their technologies, particularly in regard to CO2 emissions. An essential lever: improving aerodynamic finesse. Aerostructures, bodywork, airfoils, propellers and blades: biomimicry is an ideal tool of technological design to review or improve industrial methods and approaches concerning aerodynamics . Many species of birds, insects or even aquatic animals have amazing movement abilities. They are juggling effort, speed and endurance. Biomimicry, which is not new to the field, seeks to understand how these forms and coatings present in nature can enlighten the adoption of new design approaches for industrial structures and components. The goal: reduce drag, improve aerodynamic finesse, reduce turbulence vortex, stabilize movement, reduce friction,... The aeronautics industry is one of the most advanced in terms of bio-inspiration: winglets inspired by large raptors (-4% consumption), aerodynamic varnishes inspired by the skin of sharks (-2% consumption). The use cases are already numerous. There are still many opportunities to explore. Here is a particularly striking example. The humpback whale is a cetacean of impressive size: 13 to 15 meters long and nearly 40 tons. Despite this, it is a particularly agile marine animal , capable of hunting herring or salmon: it is capable of sharp turns to trap or chase its prey. This size vs. agility duality surprises marine biologists. They discover that part of the mystery lies in the humpback whale's anatomical features . Indeed, it owes its agility to the tubercles present on the leading edges of its fins. A peculiarity that defies common sense : how can such a deformed and non-smooth surface be so hydro- and aerodynamic? Since then, the aerodynamic effects of these protuberances have been widely studied: Tubercles reduce drag by almost 8%. They also accompany the flow of air so as to delay the stall and to increase its angle by almost 40%! Other advantages, although not demonstrated to date, have been mentionned: reduction of noise pollution and increase in lift. Diagrams produced by the Bioxegy team, as part of an infrastructure project carried out with one of our partners. The tubercles of the fins, placed upstream of the phalanges on the leading edge, allow, among other things, to stabilise and group together the disturbing vortices. ©Bioxegy | Right diagram partly based on figures from: True & William, the whalebone whales of the western North Atlantic, 1904 This discovery has since led to many bio-inspired technologies: The ZIPP company, expert manufacturer of bicycle wheels, opted for a design that reproduces the protrusions of the fin to improve the aerodynamics and stability of the whole structure: a patented technology that has significantly reduced the drag experienced by the wheel. In Canada, one of the experts who highlighted the aerodynamic phenomena created by tubercles launched the company WhalePower. It has designed a bio-inspired wind turbine blade that uses the principle of protrusion on the leading edge to improve the performance of the airfoil. Result: the wind turbine thus equipped has a 20% higher yield and is activated by weaker wind forces. A cleaning and protection device for autonomous vehicle cameras Typical examples of Bioxegy projects Biomimicry to equip the vehicles of the future CONTEXT In the coming years, there will be more and more autonomous vehicles on our roads. They are equipped with cameras that detect and interpret the immediate environment using AI, in order to react to it (brake, avoid, prevent). A technical challenge on which our teams intervened in Phase 2 (Biomimetic Research & Design Study) , after finishing Phase 1 (Pre-Seed Study). Customer : Confidential - Major French automotive supplier. PROBLEM / INITIAL CHALLENGE It is difficult to clean the surface of these cameras and protect them from dirt (loss of reliability of AI in detection). Current solutions are unsatisfactory: excessive water consumption (100L/h!) BIOLOGICAL SOURCE OF INSPIRATION Bioxegy biologists have identified a particularly effective biological reference system (BRS): the nictitating membranes of camelids. This is an effective third eyelid to evacuate and protect sand (located at eye level). BIO-INSPIRED MECATRONIC DEVICE Our engineers then designed a bio-inspired mechatronic device for protecting and cleaning the cameras of autonomous vehicles, taking a model from the nictitating membrane of camelids. Result: water consumption 10x lower! Other biomimetic topics of interest explored with the client in Phase 1 (Pre-Study): Chemical-free fastening system for interior coverings Engine cooling system Acoustics and vibrations in the passenger compartment Lightweight design and 3D printing Biomimicry is an approach which consists in drawing inspiration from nature's know-how in order to innovate .
